Mind-boggling $1.5 trillion military budget request

From:  Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action:

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.” It is clear that the United States is rapidly approaching that end, and worse – humanity’s demise by nuclear war.

On February 7th President Donald J. Trump announced on social media that he will ask Congress for a mind-boggling $1.5 trillion military budget for fiscal year 2027 – an approximately $500 billion increase from fiscal year 2026.

Should Congress pass the largest Pentagon budget in the history of our country, President Trump’s “dream military,” will continue to destabilize the world and move humanity toward the ultimate nightmare, nuclear omnicide – the end of civilization as we know it.

Taxpayers are already spending $1.02 trillion for the military, while the government guts funding for nearly every vital program serving human needs – including our environment, education, healthcare, housing, transportation and infrastructure. Meanwhile, there is no real focus on diplomacy in international relations. Instead, the Trump administration continues to pursue its hegemonic aspirations.

The President continually invokes “national security,” focusing on alleged foreign threats as he eviscerates vital government programs of every kind here at home. His threats and actions against sovereign nation states increase the risks of military confrontations, and threatens our national security as well as global security.

To create true national security we must commit to dealing with climate change, developing sustainable energy policies and practices; rebuild our crumbling infrastructure; and focus on education, healthcare and housing. We must also engage in sincere diplomacy and nonviolent conflict resolution in international relations, not the bellicose, violent, and illegal actions – under both Constitutional and international law – of the current administration.

Increased military spending and its belligerent focus dooms current and future generations to an unsustainable and much more dangerous world, and an inevitable nuclear conflict. We must recommit our tax dollars to the benefit of both current and future generations. It is totally illogical to think we can fight our way to peace!

We call on every member of Congress to find the moral and spiritual courage to take all measures to block the spending of any more tax dollars on military spending, and commit to focus spending on diplomacy, conflict resolution, and human needs both at home and abroad.

The survival of the Republic and of the whole of humanity rest in the hands of every member of Congress!
