JOANNA MACY, PRESENTE!

Founder of Nuclear Guardianship Project

As reported in a New York Times obituary, Joanna Macy has passed on at the age of 96. She has been a giant of the anti-nuclear movement, both in the U.S. and overseas, for many decades. She wrote Despair and Personal Power in the Nuclear Age in 1983, a touchstone for countless people concerned about the risk of nuclear war, as well as environmental destruction at home and abroad. She applied her “dance with despair” workshop and ceremony in places like Ukraine, ravaged by the Chornobyl nuclear catastrophe of 1986. Her Nuclear Guardianship Project, based on her expertise as a scholar of ancient Tibetan Buddhism, has inspired many nuclear waste and radioactive contamination watch-dogs for generations. The Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center in Boulder, CO, for example, has a Nuclear Guardianship Collective, focused on the forever deadly plutonium contamination at the closed nuclear weapons facility nearby. Naropa University, also in Boulder, named a Center for Resilience & Regeneration after her. Her compassion, wisdom, and spirit live on.
