DIABLO ZOMBIES?! NRC rejects emergency petition

]On July 23, 2025, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) notified attorneys representing San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace (SLOMFP), Friends of the Earth, and Environmental Working Group that their appeal to the NRC Commissioners, regarding an Emergency Enforcement Petition the environmental coalition had filed against NRC Staff’s rejection of their concerns, had also been rejected by the Commission. SLOMFP et al. have also challenged Diablo Canyon 1 & 2’s continued operation in federal court, but so far to no avail. Concerns include the age of the reactors — construction began in the early 1970s, and operations more than four decades ago — as well as seismic risks from numerous earthquake faults in the area, including one just a few hundred yards away. Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant was supposed to close by 2025, but Governor Gavin Newsom did a 180. Newsom then led the effort to bail out Diablo’s continued operations with $2.5 billion from state and federal taxpayers. Diablo is a zombie nuke, just like Palisades, TMI-1, and Duane Arnold.
