ZOMBIE REACTOR RUBBER STAMP?!
NRC Finalizes Palisades Restart EA/FONSI
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has finalized its Environmental Assessment/Finding of No Significant Impact on Holtec’s scheme to restart the closed Palisades atomic reactor in Covert, Michigan. This despite comments on the draft by 66 organizations and 150 individuals, including a demand for a higher level Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the unprecedented, unneeded, insanely expensive, and extremely high-risk zombie reactor restart. As other reactors are following the Palisades precedent, we even called for a Programmatic EIS. Our coalition will meet the mid-June deadline to intervene against Holtec’s License Amendment Request for mere BAND-AID fixes on self-inflicted, safety-critical steam generator tube degradation. And the Supreme Court will soon rule on Holtec’s New Mexico nuke dump.
