ACRS ignores Palisades’ restart risks
The Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) has written to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) chairman, capitulating to Holtec and NRC staff, on recently expressed concerns by at least one ACRS member, regarding steam generator tube degradation at the Palisades atomic reactor in Michigan.
This came despite our coalition’s expert witness, Arnie Gundersen (picutred above), with more than a half-century of nuclear engineering experience, warning ACRS that Palisades risks blowing a tube shortly after restarting operations, after 3.5 years of supposedly closed status.
ACRS was to have met again on October 10, and Gundersen planned to speak. But the ACRS meeting has been postponed until November.
The 2025 World Nuclear Industries Status Report documents a single Armenian reactor restarting from closed in the 1980s. The Palisades restart is unprecedented in the U.S.
