PROTECT BETTER: Join us to STOP more radiation exposure

Motherandchild copy

PROTECT BETTER: YES to healthy babies. NO to even more to radioactive pollution — now from billionaire AI data centers!

Beyond Nuclear, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS), Generational Radiation Impact Project (GRIP), Ecological Options Network (EON), Oregon Conservancy Foundation (OCF), and Committee to Bridge the Gap (CBG), are undertaking the Protect Better campaign to protect public health. We need to speak out against even more radiation exposure.

WHY WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK UP:

A May 2025 White House Executive Order (EO) 14300 told the agency that regulates nuclear power — the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) — to allow more radiation exposure of our communities, workers, and our environment. This is being done, in part, as a favor to the billionaires who want to use nuclear power for AI data centers, and don’t care at all about our health. But nuclear power is neither necessary nor sufficient for this purpose, assuming we need these large data centers at all. And using nuclear power will continuing making us ill, particularly women and children.

This EO directive has been roundly condemned across the world and among many groups, including public health advocates, environmental justice advocates, worker advocates, experts in radiation impact, and those who work in the radiation industries.

MAKE COMMENTS: We will get to comment (starting June 8, subject to change) on this horrible proposal that will expose us to more radiation without our knowledge or consent, so we need to prepare (see details below).

THE THREAT THIS WOULD POSE TO PUBLIC HEALTH, PARTICULARLY FEMALES AND PREGNANCY, CANNOT BE OVERSTATED:

“The results indicate a positive association between nuclear power plants proximity and cancer mortality…” finds a new study by Alwadi, et al.

“[P]ost-2006 radiation research…provides clear evidence that radiation causes more cancer, heart disease, and stroke in women compared to men.” finds a U.N. report by Nichols and Olson

“Radiation causes infertility, loss of pregnancy, birth complications and defects, as well as solid tumor cancer, leukemia, non-cancer outcomes including cardiovascular disease, increased incidence of autoimmune disease.” 41 Groups, including physicians’ groups, agreed to this statement in a letter dated November 12, 2025

The following statements can be found in a Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists articleTrump’s new radiation exposure limits could be ‘catastrophic’ for women and girls” by Blume and Schrager:

“We’ve known for decades that pregnancy is more impacted” by radiation exposure, and “we know that there is no zero risk when you’re exposed to radiation, that there could always be something that goes wrong, even with the smallest amounts of exposure.” Cindy Folkers, Radiation and Health Hazard Specialist, Beyond Nuclear

“We can easily say that deregulating nuclear waste is going to release [more] manmade radioactive materials … into the marketplace, into everyday household items that we consume, that we use every day.” Diane D’Arrigo, Nuclear Information and Resource Service

“There’s no easy way to get [radioactive pollution] back once it’s out there. It will affect not only us, but our children, our grandchildren, and many generations to come.” Mary Olson, Founder, Generational Radiation Impact Project

MAKING COMMENTS:

In order to make this drastic and horrific change allowing more radiation exposure, the NRC will have to publish a proposed rule in the Federal Register and take public comments on it. This proposed rule release is tentatively scheduled for July 2, 2026. Comments can be submitted for 30 days after this release, unless we get an extension to submit them. WE NEED YOUR COMMENTS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE INDIVIDUAL COMMENTS  for this upcoming comment period. We need as many comments as possible to let NRC know we are watching them and to build a record of public opposition. Comments don’t have to be long, but should be personal and/or geographic and issue specific.
