The following news outlets have reported on this story: Forbes; Carlsbad Current-Argus in southeastern New Mexico; Santa Fe New Mexican (all behind paywalls); and New Mexico Political Report (free access).
Beyond Nuclear has published a press release celebrating the dump’s cancellation, and thanking allies for their tireless hard work in securing this hard-won victory, that took more than a decade.
Beyond Nuclear has fought against Holtec’s consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) since the get-go on Nuclear Fool’s Day (April 1), 2017, when Holtec’s CEO, Krishna Singh, unveiled the CISF license application at a Capitol Hill press conference, which we attended, and where we spoke out.
Many long years of intense U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing proceedings, and environmental reviews, followed. We engaged at every twist and turn, alongside environmental allies in New Mexico, and across the country. For example, we broke subject matter records, in terms of the number (not to mention quality!) of public comments opposing the dump, at both the environmental scoping, as well as the Draft Environmental Impact Statement stages.
Many years of federal court battles have also taken place, all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court.
For more information about Holtec’s now blocked CISF in New Mexico, and Interim Storage Partners’ CISF just 40-some miles to the east in Texas, see our Centralized Storage website section.
