NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROLIFERATION
THE PEACEFUL ATOM GOES TO WAR
The worst environmental catastrophe would be nuclear war. As nuclear proliferation increases—more and more countries getting nuclear technology, often from the U.S.—the likelihood of nuclear weapons being used increases. The global danger of that and what a nuclear war will do to air, water, food, wildlife, and human health is why Eco-Logic is doing a show on this subject.
Nuclear power plants are a part of the nuclear proliferation problem and are how most nuclear technology is exported. The percentage of fissionable material in the nuclear fuel that is exported is higher than it has ever been and wouldn’t take much to make that nuclear power fuel into nuclear bomb fuel, though the nations that receive that fuel usually must promise not to use it to make bombs.
Our guests are Gordon Edwards, cofounder and president of the nuclear watchdog Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, has been an antinuclear activist since the 1970s, and Alfred Meyer, who is treasurer of Physicians for Social Responsibility – New York, and serves on the PSR National Advisory Council.
Our news articles this week are forests and carbon dioxide, mysteriously disappearing porcupines, and mangroves marching inland.
Our song for this episode is “Acceptable Risks”. Charlie King wrote this song about Army Corporal Paul Cooper, who was purposely exposed to the fallout from a nuclear test in 1957.
