A new drama — “Nagasaki: In the Shadow of the Flash” —  directed by Jumpei Matsumoto, whose grandfather survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, has been released in Japan as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing. The film tells the story of the unsung Japanese Red Cross nurses and follows three young nursing students as they struggle to treat the injured and dying with few resources and the knowledge that they will lose far more patients than they can save.

More  than 70,000 people were killed by the Nagasaki bombing by the end of 1945. Many others suffered from radiation-related illnesses for decades.

Matsumoto said that he felt telling these stories was especially important now “when the threat of nuclear weapons and war seems to be rising again, and that people can reconsider these issues through the experiences of the people of Nagasaki.”
