President Trump said he’d repeal the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and even claw back subsidy awards previously announced. But on March 17, Trump’s Department of Energy awarded the second installment, of $57 million, towards $1.52 billion in taxpayer-backed loan guarantees, for Holtec’s dangerous restart of the 60-year old (designed in the mid-1960s) Palisades reactor on Lake Michigan’s shore. Then a week ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that $1.3 billion in grants to reimburse the rural electric co-ops in MI, IN, and IL for 25% of power purchases from Palisades were still in place, with nuclear central to Trump’s “energy dominance” policies. Energy Secretary Chris Wright lied “zero” had died from nuclear energy.
