Coalition Opposes Duane Arnold
NextEra’s Fukushima twin design reactor in Iowa closed for good after a close call with catastrophe in August 2020. A direct hit by 140 mile per hour derecho winds not only damaged the cooling towers, but also caused a loss of offsite power. The 1% risk of a meltdown was 100 to 10,000 times higher than NRC is supposed to ever allow. But for a single NRC staffer who wouldn’t let it go, the near-miss would likely have been covered up. Recently, following Holtec’s precedent at Palisades in Michigan, and Constellation’s at Three Mile Island Unit 1 in Pennsylvania, Duane Arnold (pictured) has also begun attempting to restart. Beyond Nuclear, Don’t Waste Michigan, and Sierra Club pushed back yesterday.
