Beyond Nuclear’s radioactive waste specialist, Kevin Kamps, has published three new backgrounders about the closed for good Palisades atomic reactor (Covert Township, near South Haven), and its sibling closed reactor site, the decommissioned Big Rock Point (Hayes Township, near Charlevoix). Both sites are on Michigan’s Lake Michigan shoreline.

The backgrounders include:

(1.) “A People’s History of the Palisades Atomic Reactor” (13 pages);

(2.) “Nuclear Nightmares: Palisades’ ‘Zombie’ Reactor Restart and SMR New Build Schemes” (3 pages);

(3.) “Holtec: Criminality, Corruption, Incompetence, and Inexperience” (2 pages).

Holtec International has joined forces with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to undertake the unprecedented, extremely high risk, and insanely expensive (for the public — $15.7 billion, and counting!) “zombie” reactor restart and “Small Modular Reactor” new build schemes at Palisades (and Big Rock Point). The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in its complicity and collusion, stands ready to slow motion rubber-stamp the nefarious scheme by early 2025, to enable Holtec to restart the Palisades “zombie” reactor by August 2025, and fire up SMRs by 2030.

Kamps has been watch-dogging Palisades and Big Rock Point since 1992, a relative newcomer compared to the likes of Michael Keegan of Don’t Waste Michigan and Coalition for a Nuclear-Free Great Lakes, who has been watch-dogging them for many years longer!
