COP27 “awash” in big polluters
The COP27 climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, is reportedly “awash” in fossil fuel representatives, according to the Washington Post, and there appears to be an equal rash of nuclear propagandists there, lead by representatives of the US government along with the inevitable nuclear power-promoting International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The US has already chosen the occasion of the COP, meant to be solving the climate crisis, to instead seal three nuclear power deals with Eastern European countries. After announcing a 3-reactor deal (for the Westinghouse AP1000) with Poland, the US, under the dubious leadership of US Special Climate Envoy, John Kerry, has now clinched small modular reactor deals with Romania and, incredibly, Ukraine.
This all the while ignores not only the fact that SMRs will never arrive in time nor in enough numbers to do anything for climate change, but the very real peril nuclear reactors have put not only Ukraine but most of Europe in, as Ukraine’s 15 reactors are now embroiled in a war.
But it’s not the nuclear power plants that are the problem, the IAEA chief, Rafael Grossi, assures us. It’s the war. A bit like pretending it’s not guns that kill people, just bad guys.
