Backgrounder, posted in PDF format with functioning hot links to cited documents.

This backgrounder complements a June 14, 2024 action alert focused on preventing yet another $150 million bailout by the State of Michigan for the Palisades zombie reactor restart.

(Unfortunately, the State of Michigan Legislature passed the Palisades bailout as part of the budget bill, on June 27, 2024. Governor Whitmer is expected to sign it into law in the near future. This raises the bailouts provided by the State of Michigan towards the zombie reactor restart at Palisades to $300 million.

See a breakdown of the $8 billion in additional federal taxpayer, and electric ratepayer, bailouts associated with the Palisades restart. Not to mention $7.4 billion more, sought by Holtec from federal taxpayers in order to design certify, construct, and operate two “Small Modular Reactors” — of 300 Megawatts-electric each — at Palisades, and yet more at Big Rock Point, Michigan.)
