In response to Arnie’s mention of the potential need to evacuate residents if Palisades blows too many degraded steam generator tubes all at once (aka a reactor core meltdown): FEMA@PALISADES

Ask the tribes to participate also Professor Gordon and Dr Gregory Jachzo wrote a book against nukes—like MacFarland, former NRC director.
I think we need to focus on our side—anti nuke
2025-12-15 19:15:03 From Kevin Kamps to Everyone:
I agree with Ed’s ideas about Macfarlane (on waste — she’s less opposed to “SMRs” in general, other than the waste generation rates, which are off the charts); M.V. Ramana (he’s on Beyond Nuclear’s advisory board). Add’l ideas: Dr. Gordon Edwards with CCNR — he’s been very outspoken against “SMRs.” Perhaps even Ukrainian anti-nuke leaders opposing Holtec’s 20 “SMRs” targeting Ukraine.

Jessie Deer In Water could potentially bridge our efforts with the Pokagon Potawatomi in Dowagiac. I know others who have contacts with the Gun Lake Potawatomi in Hastings/Delton area. There are strong Indigenous EJ activists/organizers across Michigan. Many are focused on the Line 5 Canadian tar sands crude oil pipeline fight at the Straits of Mackinac — another existential threat to the Great Lakes, in addition to Palisades and other atomic reactors.

Re: locations, I’d previously mentioned Circle Pines Center near Delton/Hastings/Gun Lake Potawatomi, but within the Palisades 50-mile Emergency Planning Zone; and our original idea, to take the fight to the bad guys on the southwest Michigan shore, as at Lake Michigan College in South Haven, and/or Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor — the very places where Holtec and NRC have sold their snake oil for the past several years.

Arnie as another go-to expert presenter for the “SMNR” gathering/event
2025-12-15 19:22:15 From Kevin Kamps to Everyone:
Chris’s idea is good. The nuclear fights and the AI data center fights very much overlap. The latter is the supposed justification for the former. Both Palisades zombie reactor restart, and the SMNR new builds, are supposedly being justified by AI data center new builds.

Michael, Kevin & All – I need to pop off but hope you can send back the items suggested for having an SMR’s Conference possibly in the Spring of ’26

Jackzo met with us very near Palisades in South Haven on May 25, 2012. Macfarlane met with us in Benton Harbor in June 2014. In between, we also met with NRC Commissioner Magwood very near Palisades in March 2013. We asked to meet with NRC Commissioner Svinicki in May 2013, but she did not even acknowledge our request. But those four visits by NRC Commissioners (two of them Obama’s NRC chairs; Svinicki Trump’s future NRC chair) was the most, by far, of any reactor in the country. Just in a 2 year time period.
2025-12-15 19:26:26 From Kevin Kamps to Everyone:
Holtec stands by its 2030 fire up date for two SMNRs at Palisades — “SMR-300s” — 300 Megawatts-electric each. Not small. Two “SMR-300s” would nearly double the nuclear megawattage Palisades, from the current 800 MW-e, to 1,400 MW-e.
2025-12-15 19:28:33 From Kevin Kamps to Everyone:
Each SMR-300” would be 4.5 times larger than the 67 MW-e Big Rock Point reactor (Palisades’ sibling, where Holtec wants to build one or more “SMR-300s” as well), and also the 67 MW-e Fermi 1 reactor in Monroe County, Michigan. Big Rock Point had some of the worst releases of hazardous radioactivity of any reactor in the country — more than 3 million Curies from 1962 to 1997. Fermi 1 had a partial core meltdown on Oct. 5, 1966, and “We Almost Lost Detroit.” So imagine what “SMR-300s” could do?!

Yes Circle Pines. Vic MacManemy would probably like that location as well as myself. There’s housing there and not as hard to drive to or in as Chicago etc. I’m not a city person

I think it should be two solid days — such as Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps with a prime the pump Friday evening concert or film showing, and perhaps a Monday morning press conference. We should put in all this organizing effort for a one-day event.
